Move quickly. Every day your pet is missing, your chances for recovery grow smaller. We suggest you take immediate action to recover your pet. Check the Center every day. Please remember that a current driver’s license, State ID card, or other photo ID is required to enter the Center to search for a lost pet. Also, please have proof of ownership and proof of a current rabies vaccine with you. Visit us on a regular basis. If you do not locate your pet on your first visit, do not be discouraged. CONTINUE TO VISIT THE CENTER AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK. Many well-meaning people who find stray animals tend to hold them and attempt to locate the owner prior to turning the animal over to a county facility.
Talk to your neighbors. Advise everyone in your area that there is a reward for the safe return of your pet. Post signs. Post lost notices in area papers and homeowners association bulletins. Notify your neighborhood watch. Post lost notices at your Animal Control facility. We provide both Lost and Found boards, including our electronic bulletin board. Follow up with all sources on a regular basis.
Do not depend solely on your animal’s identification tags to get him/her home.
As an example, many people will attempt to contact a lost pets owner by removing the collar and tags and going inside to call phone numbers listed, leaving the animal loose outside. The animal wanders away. Someone else down the street finds the animal and turns it into Animal Control without identification. An alternate solution to this situation is to permanently mark your animal with a tattoo and/or microchip. Talk to your veterinarian about this permanent identification.
If someone contacts you and wants to set up a meeting to return your animal, BE SAFE. Make sure that the meeting occurs in a high traffic, public area. If possible, take a friend along with you.
** Be aware that there is a phone scam regarding lost pets. The scam goes.... Someone calls the owner and identifies him/herself as a "trucker". He/She found your animal but took it with them in their truck to another city. If you will wire them money, they will ship your animal back home. Many people have lost money to this scam and have still not recovered their pets. If you receive such a call, get as much information as possible and contact your local police department.
If you live near a county line or near a high traffic recreation area (Stone Mountain Park, Candler Park, etc), check with other area facilities. People who find lost animals tend to turn animals into their own animal facilities.
DeKalb Humane Society occasionally accepts stray animals. Please check their facility also when looking for a lost dog or cat.
You may also check the www.lostpets.com service to both post lost or found pet information.

The length of time an animal is held in the Center is established by County Ordinance. We impound and hold animals for many reasons. Following are a list of common impounds and holding periods. Other impounds are held on a case-by-case basis. We never count the day the animal enters the Center because the animal may have come in after closing to the public. Due to being closed on Sunday, every owner will have a minimum of three days to locate their animal in the Center.
It is very important that your pet wears identification. Don’t just do it because it’s the law, do it to protect your best friend! Animals running loose without identification are considered STRAYS and are held five (5) business days. We're closed on Sunday. Animals with traceable identification are held up to thirty days while we attempt to contact the owner. Contacts are made by phone, a personal visit, and/or registered letter. Animals with identification are held three (3) days after the return of the signed and dated certified/registered mail receipt for the owner notification letter required by Section 5-7 of the DeKalb County Code. If identification cannot be traced either through our records or to a County veterinarian, animal(s) will be held five (5) days from impound date.
Animals left restrained on public property or left confined at a residence when the owner moves away are considered ABANDONMENTS. If we cannot locate the owner, these animals are held 5 business days. If there is a possibility that the owner can be located, we will hold the animal until we locate and prosecute the owner in court.
EVICTIONS are held five (5) business days from date of impound.
POLICE IMPOUNDS are held as long as the case is active or until the prosecuting officer authorizes release. If your animal was impounded by the police department, a property release is required to reclaim you pet. Please contact us immediately for further information. We will release PD Impound animals only with a signed Property Release and only to the owner or owner’s representative.
All LIVESTOCK is held five (5) days from date of impound unless otherwise reclaimed by the owner.
